Anchorage is Alaska's largest city and is a stepping-stone to the smaller towns and rural areas of our Great State. Surrounded by mountains and water, it is truly a beautiful city. The Municipality has 1,961 square miles and includes the smaller communities of Eagle River and Girdwood. The population is approximately 298,908.
Anchorage has most of the features that you find in many large U.S. cities. The city boasts one of the busiest airports on the West Coast, and is the air crossroads for both passengers and freight on east-west routes between the United States and Pacific Rim countries. Since Anchorage acts as a hub for most of the states other cities and villages, it is truly the transportation, health care, communications, and financial center for the State. Anchorage is often referred to as the "City of Lights and Flowers".
